WHAT IS HAWTHORN?
Hawthorne is a flowering shrub that is part of the Rosaceae, or rose, family. It is native to northern Europe, but now grows throughout the world. The red berry-like fruit of this spiny plant is sometimes called "haw," and has been used for both health aiding and culinary purposes. Hawthorn, also part of the Crataegus species and has been used to help with heart complications as far back as the 1st century. By the early 1800s, American doctors were using it to help with circulatory disorders and respiratory problems. Traditionally, hawthorn berrys leaves are know to be edible as well.
WHAT IS HAWTHORN USED FOR?
Studies report that hawthorn contains antioxidants, including oligomeric procyandins, or OPCs, which are also found in grapes, and quercetin. Antioxidants are substances that destroy free radicals, which are compounds in the body that damage cell membranes, tamper with DNA, and even cause cell death. Free radicals occur naturally in the body and grow in number as we age. Scientists believe free radicals contribute to the aging process (such as wrinkling), as well as the development of a number of health problems. Antioxidants in hawthorn may help stop some of the damage from free radicals, especially when it comes to the heart. The berries contain antioxidants that have a variety of therapeutic effects including strengthening the walls of blood vessels. HAWTHORN BERRY AND THE HEART AND BLOOD PRESSURE
A study of 92 men and women diagnosed with primary mild hypertension were administered a hawthorn flower extract or placebo for four months. Data was collected on blood pressure readings monthly. At the end of the study the researchers concluded that the group receiving the hawthorn flower extract demonstrated a significant decrease in systolic and diastolic blood pressure after the three months. This proves the established hypothesis that hawthorn extract lowers blood pressure to be true.
